Interview with MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : The main inspiration behind the design of the watch is the Scandinavian minimalism, with a twist. The idea was to keep the design as simple as possible, but still to give it a twist and a masculine character. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : To create a unique and timeless designed watch, that will fit the modern man. The modern man can have many different shapes, in terms of both fashion and style, and therefore it was an important factor that design of the watch was subtle enough to suit different characters, without losing the integrity and character. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : The watch has already been put in production, and a limited edition of 100 watches will be available for delivery, from mid-June this year. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : It took around two years to complete the design of the first watch. Several prototypes and an on-going adjustment of details were necessary before I was satisfied with the final prototype. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : I decided to pursue my life-long ambition, to design and create my own watch brand. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : We have already started producing the watch. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : I have always had a passion for, in particular, mechanical watches and design, in general. Being able to produce a watch according to my own design and specifications, is a dream come true. .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : No .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : Men, who care about good design and quality materials, from 25 years and up. .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : In comparison with other Scandinavian watch brands, that derives from the same minimalist philosophy, our watch combines the minimalist style with a more contemporary masculine, yet subtle, design. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : The name of the watch 'CPH ST-1', is simply referring to the origins, Copenhagen (CPH), and the materials the watch is made from, steel (ST). .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : Hand-drawn sketches and digital software, especially Photoshop and Illustrator .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : The design in itself separates from other watch brands, however, a specific feature is the inner bezel with it's linear engravings. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : Yes, we work together with an experienced watch manufacturer. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : The movement used in the watch is a high-quality Swiss-made automatic (self-winding) movement. .Frank Scott: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : We researched the market as broad as possible, to make sure the design wasn't similar to other watch brands. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : The biggest challenge was the constant improvement of details, to make sure it turned out exactly as I wanted. Each revision of the design would add a minimum of 2-3 extra months to the process of creating the final prototype. .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : To receive feedback from highly experienced designers/judges. .Frank Scott: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?. MANNICHE Timepieces David Manniche : It is a challenging, but valuable experience to put words on the ideas behind the design. .
